The Jungle The Heart Gave Birth In

There are a few key ingredients in the making of great art. One of them is heresy. I don’t mean the predictable heresy against the church or the previous generation. I’m talking about heresy against the art world itself, and heresy against the academy that pretends to give the art world safe harbor. You’d be surprised just how difficult it is to commit this heresy. But it is essential. When you leave it out, you are left with regret as an artist.

My mind is not a mechanical mind
my precision is only the heart’s precision

Let them break their hard metaphors
on the sharp fragments I sew
let the dream trickle to the steel heart
and break its flow

Calculation has failed
no dream can flower in their frozen field
the mind is the jungle the heart gave birth in
